“A reflection on why I stopped asking for success and started asking for the qualities required to earn it.”

For a long time, my prayers sounded like most people’s prayers.
I wanted opportunities.
I wanted progress.
I wanted recognition.
I wanted my plans to work.
But recently, something changed.
These days, I find myself repeating the same three requests to God:
Give me strength.
Give me courage.
Give me willpower.
At first glance, these may seem like simple words.
But the more I reflect on them, the more I realize that these three qualities are the foundation of every meaningful transformation.
Give Me Strength
When I ask for strength, I am not asking to avoid challenges.
I am asking for the ability to stand when challenges arrive.
Life has taught me that difficulties are not optional.
Unexpected situations arrive.
People disappoint us.
Plans fail.
Circumstances change.
The question is not whether hardship will come.
The question is whether we will remain standing when it does.
Strength is not about becoming invincible.
It is about refusing to break.
It is emotional strength when criticism hurts.
It is mental strength when confusion clouds our judgment.
It is spiritual strength when faith is tested.
It is physical strength when the body is tired but the work is not finished.
Today, my prayer is simple:
“God, don’t make my path easier. Make me stronger.”
Give Me Courage
Out of the three qualities, courage may be the one I need the most.
Because courage is not only about facing danger.
It is about facing truth.
The truth about ourselves.
The truth about our relationships.
The truth about our mistakes.
The truth about the life we are living.
Many people imagine courage as the absence of fear.
I see it differently.
Courage is moving forward despite fear.
Courage is making decisions when certainty is unavailable.
Courage is accepting criticism without losing yourself.
Courage is facing uncomfortable conversations.
Courage is taking responsibility for your choices.
Courage is having patience when immediate results are nowhere to be seen.
Sometimes courage simply means refusing to run away.
My prayer is not:
“Remove all fear from my life.”
My prayer is:
“Give me the courage to walk forward even when fear is present.”
Give Me Willpower
This may be the most practical prayer of all.
Because dreams are easy.
Ideas are easy.
Planning is easy.
Execution is difficult.
There are days when motivation disappears.
Days when enthusiasm fades.
Days when excitement is nowhere to be found.
In those moments, willpower becomes more important than inspiration.
Willpower is choosing discipline over mood.
It is working when nobody is watching.
It is showing up when results are invisible.
It is doing what needs to be done even when emotions suggest otherwise.
For years, I believed success belonged to the most talented people.
Now I believe success often belongs to the people who simply refuse to quit.
My prayer has changed.
Instead of asking for endless motivation, I ask for something more powerful:
“Give me the willpower to continue.”
The Hidden Meaning Behind These Prayers
The more I think about it, the more I realize I am not really asking for strength, courage, and willpower.
Those are only the tools.
What I am truly asking for is the ability to trust myself.
To trust that I can survive difficult times.
To trust that I can face uncomfortable truths.
To trust that I can keep moving even when the journey becomes long and lonely.
Strength helps us endure.
Courage helps us face reality.
Willpower helps us continue.
Together, they create a person who does not depend entirely on circumstances to move forward.
A person who understands that growth is not found in comfort.
It is found in the quiet decision to keep going.
My Prayer Today
So if I could summarize my prayer in a single sentence, it would be this:
“God, give me the strength to endure, the courage to face reality, and the willpower to continue becoming the person I am meant to be.”
Everything else can wait.
